To The Least of These!

Friday night debrief for ginger’s journal

For tonight’s blog – Our student leader Liz Davidson is going to share:

Today started with an awesome pancake and bacon breakfast made by Mr. Chappell and crew. Our first work project today was landscaping and cleaning at the YWAM base houses, so we got to sleep in some (hooray)! From 10:00 to 2:00, teams cleaned up pine needles and palm fronds, raked leaves, and did a thorough cleaning and re-organizing of the pantry. The raking team gather what felt like a thousand bags of yard debris… at any rate the pile of trash bags was taller than me. The kitchen team went through piles of dish rags.

After a lunch of sandwiches and left-over soup, one team cleared up while another went out front to sweep porches and gather a few more bags of pine needles. Then we got ready for ministry at the Fisher Housing playground. We ran through the skits one more time, cut up paper for drawing, and made extra bubble wands out of wire hangers (skills!). Then it was off to the playground. The kids started gathering as soon as the vans arrived.

We got to draw, blow bubbles, and play with chalk with the younger kids. The boys played a great game of football, and other games such as tag and “slap the donut” (a game which involves running around with a flailing kid on your back). Then it was time for the skits. The students did a great job of getting the kids’ attention with songs and keeping the skits going despite interruptions. After the skits, we got into groups to pray with the kids. Many of the children prayed for their grades, but some prayer requests were more serious. One boy prayed for his mom, as his dad had left them. Several kids prayed for protection of bullies on the bus or at school. Mrs. G’s kids prayed for supper because they didn’t know if they would have any.

After a dinner of taco salad and taquitos, students shared funny parts of the day. Jernee and Liz earned the nicknames “makeup” and “tomboy.” Mr. Miller was serenaded by a girl with a marker “microphone” – “I don’t need no mineral (material) things.”

It’s a great privilege for me to get to hang out with the 9th grade girls. They’re really great.

Liz

Tomorrow we will head to the 9th Ward and see where the levee broke and caused major damage during the Katrina hurricane devastation! We’ll see the homes that Brad Pitt has helped build. We’ll ride the ferry across the Mississippi and go shopping in the French Market and maybe have some alligator for lunch! We’ll end the sharing whose name we chose and bless them with scripture and words of encouragement! Then we’ll pack up to head home Sunday!

Our devotional today was titled “To The Least Of These”

We read Matthew 25:37-40 it ends with … “they have been full of the love of Christ and have faithfully served me by serving others!”   These kids have done an amazing job of working together and serving others – YWAM and those precious kids we spent the afternoon with. It took teamwork to accomplish everything that got done today – working, playing and ministry!

Tomorrow we are going to talk about being a friend or a frenemy.

A Frenemy is someone who acts like a friend to your face, but behind your back acts like an enemy.

At Summit we want to build young men and women who are friends of God and friends to each other.

The Greatest Commandment

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”   Mark 12:29-31New International Version (NIV)

Thursday in New Orleans!

Thursday

We did our walking tour this morning, but it was a little too brisk to stay out there and do the normal prayer time in the square!

We had our Café Du Monde beignets! I will confess I did get a little powdered sugar ‘cloud’ war going on! This was the cleanest beignet eating class I’ve ever brought… I had to make a move! We had a great time!

Abigail  I  love this face!   powderd sugar !  It might not be easy to see… but we are ‘sugar coated’ from our powdered sugar cloud war!

After lunch we went to the nursing home and helped the clients play bingo! They don’t usually have bingo on Thursday, however, it was one of the ladies’ birthday and bingo what a part of her celebration!

We ended the afternoon playing with the kids in the complexes up the street! That is where we will go tomorrow afternoon for more play time and kids club! Here’s my dinner crew!  They were AWESOME! Spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, salad… YUMMY!

Cooking team 2015 This was actually the lunch crew! Henry Afterwards a little circle soccer game going on while the cleaning crew did the dishes!

We debriefed our day and each one shared their favorite part of the day! This is a great time for each one of the kids to hear how their fellow classmates felt about the different events of the day! You can be standing by someone, laughing, listening and being involved in the same activity but you don’t know what’s going on in their heart until they began to share!

We ended the evening practicing our skits and songs for tomorrow afternoon!

Pray for continued good weather, good attitudes and God’s continued blessing on each one on the trip!

Oh… in the morning every person on the trip will have their name on a piece of paper placed in a bowl. Then we will each take a slip of paper and will each keep that persons name a secret…all day!  We are then to take notice of them all day and in tomorrow night’s debriefing we will each share whose name we have and bless and encourage them letting them know what we see in them!

It’s has always been a really wonderful time of blessing each other!

Have a blessed day – Speak blessings to those around you!

Nite all!

We’re here! Wednesday Night in Algiers Point!

Hi Parents,

What a great group of kids!  I know because I’ve spent a lot of time with them… enclosed in a van.. and I still like them ALOT!

A big thank you to Mrs. Castello and Oscar Medina for giving you all the IRIS shout out and email to let you know we arrived!  I didn’t have the login to the wifi here yet!

We got here and unloaded and went and had all you can eat Italian buffet at Little Sicily!

The ferry doesn’t run in the evening any more so here’s our new schedule for tomorrow

  1. We’re going to go do our tour in the morning, let the ground dry up for our work project.
  2. We’ll tour near Jackson Square and then prayer walk Jackson Square … then end the morning with beignets from Cafe Du Monde! (W)e’re letting the ground dry a little more before our work project on the YWAM base
  3. Lunch and then to the nursing home for a Wild game of BINGO! ! !   Trust me… it’s serious business – Bingo with the men and women there!  and SO fun!
  4. Prep for the children’s ministry
  5. Dinner
  6. Evening devos and debrief…

The kids are all settling down!  The girls are doing the devos and going to bed.

The guys… are doing something!  Actually they are having a guy’s meeting and then reading their scriptures for tonight and going to bed!  We are actually in two different dorm houses… right next to each other!  We love it… more bathrooms and showers for us!  : )

IF you want to follow along – we’re reading Romans 12:1-21

We are going to really focus on the following verses – 1,2,6-8,10,13,17,18

(okay… it’s almost all of them but it makes them feel better if it doesn’t look like it)

Here’s the questions we are asking?  What is God telling me in the following verses and what does He want me to do about that verse!

Tonight we’re really just reading .. tomorrow morning we’ll begin to answer those questions!

Usually I don’t get to write in the journal this early.  So don’t wait up each night.  But there should be something first thing every morning!

Be a blessing – because you’ve been blessed!
